Drug Uses Flagyl (Metronidazole)
A nitroimidazole used to treat amebiasis; vaginitis; trichomonas infections; giardiasis; anaerobic bacteria; and treponemal infections. It has also been proposed as a radiation sensitizer for hypoxic cells. According to the Fourth Annual Report on Carcinogens (NTP 85-002, 1985, p133), this substance may reasonably be anticipated to be a carcinogen

Mechanism of Action
Unionized metronidazole is selective for anaerobic bacteria due to their ability to intracellularly reduce metronidazole to its active form. This reduced metronidazole then disrupts DNA's helical structure, inhibiting bacterial nucleic acid synthesis and resulting in bacterial cell death.
How Taken Flagyl (Metronidazole)
Take metronidazole exactly as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these instructions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you.
Take each dose with a full glass (8 ounces) of water.
Take all of the metronidazole that has been prescribed for you even if you begin to feel better. Your symptoms may start to improve before the infection is completely treated.
Store metronidazole at room temperature away from moisture and heat.
Use injectable metronidazole exactly as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand the instructions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you.
Possible Side Effects
If you experience any of the following serious side effects, stop taking metronidazole and seek emergency medical attention:
an allergic reaction (swelling of your lips, tongue, or face; shortness of breath; closing of your throat; or hives);
seizures;
numbness or tingling;
dizziness or loss of coordination; or
severe diarrhea.
Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Continue to take metronidazole and talk to your doctor if you experience
darkening of your urine;
nausea, vomiting, or loss of appetite;
an unpleasant metallic taste in your mouth;
constipation or mild diarrhea;
headache; or
swollen or sore tongue.

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Take the rest of the day's doses at evenly spaced intervals unless otherwise directed by your doctor.
Interaction for Metronidazole
Oral metronidazole has been reported to potentiate the anticoagulant effect of coumarin and warfarin, resulting in a prolongation of prothrombin time. Drug interactions should be kept in mind when METROGELO` (metronidazole gel), 1% is prescribed for patients who are receiving anticoagulant treatment, although they are less likely to occur with topical metronidazole administration because of low absorption.
Storage
Store Flagyl at room temperature, between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C). Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Flagyl out of the reach of children and away from pets.
Food Interactions
Avoid alcohol.
Take with food to reduce irritation.
