Drug Uses Suprax (Cefixime)
Cefixime, an antibiotic, is a third-generation cephalosporin like ceftriaxone and cefotaxime. Cefixime is highly stable in the presence of beta-lactamase enzymes. As a result, many organisms resistant to penicillins and some cephalosporins due to the presence of beta-lactamases, may be susceptible to cefixime. The antibacterial effect of cefixime results from inhibition of mucopeptide synthesis in the bacterial cell wall.
How Taken Suprax (Cefixime)
Take all of the Suprax that has been prescribed for you even if you begin to feel better. Your symptoms may start to improve before the infection is completely treated.
Take Suprax with food or milk if it causes stomach upset.
Take this medication exactly as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these instructions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you.
Take each dose with a full glass of water.

Measure the liquid form of Suprax with a dose-measuring spoon or cup, not a regular tablespoon, to be sure that you measure the correct dose. If you do not have one of these, ask your pharmacist where you can get one. Shake the suspension well before measuring a dose.

Take Suprax at evenly spaced intervals throughout the day and night to keep a constant level of drug in your body. It is important to take Suprax regularly to get the most benefit.
Store the tablets and capsules at room temperature away from moisture and heat.
Store the suspension in the refrigerator. Throw away any unused medication after 14 days.
Possible Side Effects
Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:
diarrhea that is watery or bloody;
fever, sore throat, and joint pain with a severe blistering, peeling, and red skin rash;
numbness or tingly feeling;
warmth, redness, or tingling under your skin;
swelling in your hands or feet;
fast or pounding heartbeats;
chest pain, shortness of breath.
Less serious side effects may include:
mild nausea, stomach pain, constipation, loss of appetite;
anxiety, drowsiness;
increased night-time urination;
headache;
runny nose, sore throat, cough;
or vaginal itching or discharge.
This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Tell your doctor about any unusual or bothersome side effect.
if i Missed Dose
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the medicine at the next regularly scheduled time. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
Food Interactions
Preferably on an empty stomach, rate of absorption is decreased but extenet of absorption remains the same: not really problematic.
Mechanism of Action
Like all beta-lactam antibiotics, cefixime binds to specific penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located inside the bacterial cell wall, causing the inhibition of the third and last stage of bacterial cell wall synthesis. Cell lysis is then mediated by bacterial cell wall autolytic enzymes such as autolysins; it is possible that cefixime interferes with an autolysin inhibitor.
Half Life
3-4 hours (may range up to 9 hours). In severe renal impairment (5 to 20 mL/min creatinine clearance), the half-life increased to an average of 11.5 hours.

Storage
Store powder at 68° to 77°F. After reconstitution, store at room temperature or under refrigeration for up to 14 days. Keep tightly closed. Shake well before using. Discard unused portion after 14 days.
More Information about Suprax (Cefixime)
Suprax Suspension may cause dizziness. This effect may be worse if you take it with alcohol or certain medicines. Use Suprax Suspension with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to it.
Suprax Suspension only works against bacteria; it does not treat viral infections (eg, the common cold).
Be sure to use Suprax Suspension for the full course of treatment. If you do not, the medicine may not clear up your infection completely. The bacteria could also become less sensitive to this or other medicines. This could make the infection harder to treat in the future.
Long-term or repeated use of Suprax Suspension may cause a second infection. Tell your doctor if signs of a second infection occur.
Contact your doctor right away if stomach pain or cramps, severe diarrhea, or bloody stools occur. Do not treat diarrhea without first checking with your doctor
Suprax Suspension may reduce the ability of your blood to clot. Avoid activities that may cause bruising or injury. Tell your doctor if you have unusual bleeding or bruising or dark, tarry, or bloody stools.
Do not receive a live typhoid vaccine while you are taking Suprax Suspension. It may not work as well. Talk with your doctor if you are scheduled to receive a live typhoid vaccine.
Diabetes patients - Suprax Suspension may cause the results of some tests for urine glucose to be wrong. Ask your doctor before you change your diet or the dose of your diabetes medicine.
Suprax Suspension may interfere with certain lab tests. Be sure your doctor and lab personnel know you are using Suprax Suspension.
Suprax Suspension should be used with extreme caution in CHILDREN younger than 6 months old; safety and effectiveness in these children have not been confirmed.
Use Suprax Suspension with extreme caution in CHILDREN younger than 10 years old who have diarrhea or an infection of the stomach or bowel.
PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you become pregnant, contact your doctor. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of using Suprax Suspension while you are pregnant. It is not known if Suprax Suspension is found in breast milk. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you use Suprax Suspension, check with your doctor or pharmacist. Discuss any possible risks to your baby.
